How to get to Shilin Night Market
Strangely Shilin MRT station is not the right station to go to, although you could walk from there to the night market it is the previous stop which is closer.
Take the MRT to JianTan station, and not only do you get to see the unique architecture of this transit station, which combines high tech suspension like a bridge with the concepts of a traditional Dragon Boat, but it is much easier to walk from here to the market.
The JianTan station is on the Red Line and is a quick 10 minute ride from the rest of the city.
As the station is elevated you take the escalator down from the platform to the street level where the ticket halls are. Public restrooms are available here.
Use Exit 1, and if you are visiting in the evening then very many people will be walking from the station to the market so it is obvious which way to go.
When you come out of the station you are under the elevated railway line, walk out onto the pavement and follow the WenLin Road about 40 meters north until you come to the pedestrian road crossing. Don't take the first crossing but keep walking another 40 meters under the trees another to the second one which lets you cross straight over to the start of the market area.
Late in the evening many people just crowd across the road and perhaps you can follow the flow.
Once cross the road you are at the south apex of the triangle that is Shilin market.
Straight to the market building
Taking the left path or the right path are both possible ways to start your exploration of the Shilin Night market.
Walk about 200 meters along the road on the left, which is JiHe Road, and you will find the Shilin Market building on your right, just past the car park. The building is large and set back a little from the road, it is easily seen at night due to the lights and the large crowds.
Explore the street stalls
Alternatively you can take the right hand path outside the MRT station which means walk along WenLin Road about 280 meters as far as Danan Road, which is a turning on your left. There are many interesting shops and stalls along WenLin road as you walk, and when you get into the narrow Danan Road then it is packed with things to see but very crowded in the evenings.
Walk 200 meters along Danan Road to get to the historic temple which is bright with red lanterns at nighttime.
